Basic Information: What is Lamisil AT Cream?

This will be a review of Novartis Lamisil AT Cream.  It is claimed that this product can cure most cases of athlete’s foot in as little as one week. It provides relief as well for the symptoms of itching, cracking, burning and scaling that can be caused by athlete’s foot. If you are interested in finding out whether this product is for you or not then read on.

Formula

  • Terbinafine Hydrochloride 1%
  • Benzyl Alcohol
  • Cetyl Alcohol
  • Cetyl Palmitate
  • Isopropyl Myristate
  • Polysorbate 60
  • Purified Water
  • Sodium Hydroxide
  • Sorbitan Monostearate
  • Stearyl Alcohol

The active ingredient in this cream is Terbinafine Hydrochloride and is an antifungal. This means that it kills fungi and so can deal with the fungus that causes athlete’s foot as well as jock itch and ringworm, which this product is also effective at treating. There are no obvious allergens in Lamisil AT Cream. Although this is an antifungal cream, this cannot be used for vaginal yeast infections.

Directions

This product can be used by children over the age of 12 and by adults. The affected area should be washed well with soap and water and completely dried before the cream is applied. Where athlete’s foot has only occurred between the toes, the cream should be applied twice daily, once in the morning and once at night, for one week, or as your doctor directs. Athlete’s foot on the bottom or sides of your feet should be treated with the cream twice a day at morning and night for two weeks, or as otherwise directed by your doctor. In the treatment of jock itch or ringworm, Lanistil AT should be applied once a day to the affected area at morning or night for one week, unless directed otherwise by a doctor. You must wash your hands after each application.

Price

This cream cannot be bought directly from the manufacturer but must instead be bought from a retailer. As a result, price varies depending on where the product is bought. For instance, Walmart sells the .42oz version of this product for $8.84 and the 1oz version of it for $21.05. While price varies from retailer to retailer, the manufacturer offers a $2 discount on Lamisil AT, or any other Lamisil product, by using a coupon that can be printed from the Lamisil website. However, the expiry date of this coupon is May 8th 2015, which has already passed and so the coupon is useless. This does not reflect well on the manufacturer.

What to Expect

After using this cream for a week, I found that the product did what it said. It cleared up the obvious symptoms of athlete’s foot. The itching took a little longer to get rid of but it seemed to work well. It took a few days before the peeling and cracking went away. In the long term, this cream does not stop you from getting athlete’s foot again in the future. In addition, if you stop using it too early, you have a higher chance of re-infection so this is a product you will end up using on a regular basis.

Keep an Eye Out

The alcohol in this can cause dryness and irritation to the skin. You should make sure that you do not use it on your scalp, in or around your eyes and mouth or on your nails. If you do, you should wash it off immediately, with your eyes to be thoroughly rinsed out with clean water. If the infection worsens or the skin becomes too irritated then you should cease using it and consult your doctor.

Manufacturer’s Commitment

It is concerning that the manufacturer does not offer any kind of guarantee. It suggests that they do not have faith in their product and so the effectiveness could seem doubtful. However, the majority of reviews of this product suggest that it is highly effective and greatly praised. Most of them are marked as incentivized though, meaning that people are giving reviews in return for a reward. As a result, the reviews may be highly biased and written in a positive manner at the manufacturer’s request.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the product has a mixture of positive and negative points. The product did seem to work well although not quite as well as the manufacturer seemed to suggest. Applying the cream was easy enough although it was difficult to remember to wash a second time for the night application. There were plenty of positive reviews but it is not clear how many of them are honest reviews rather than ones skewed by some manner of reward. A negative is that there is no warning given that the alcohol can dry and irritate the skin. The product also lacks a guarantee, which means that you cannot get your money back if this product does not work for you. If Lamisil AT Cream is a product that you have to use on a regular basis then it may prove to be a very costly product in the long term. You may decide that this product is not the one for you.
